Before they left Kersen’s home, Donovan made a few more calls from Bitari’s phone. He reminded Roark to put up footage from the tiger rescue on the center’s website and Donovan’s Tumblr account, ignoring Gemi’s long-suffering expression. He then sent out a few well-placed emails, including a new Change.org petition. While he was doing that, Kersen ran over to Mentauri’s house to inform her of the latest developments, both with the council hearing and Gemi’s safe return. Kersen returned it with news that Mentauri would hold a village meeting the following evening. She expected Donovan and Kersen to attend.

There was a lot of traffic on the road, and by the time they reached the council chamber, all crammed together in Bitari’s truck, Donovan was sweaty and his arms were itching again. He wasn’t about to tell Kersen, however. Shifting while they were away from the jungle was simply out of the question. Inner beast, you will obey me in this. They managed to find one of the last parking spaces and exited the vehicle, hurrying over to the main building with the provincial council chamber.

When they reached the chamber, however, a security guard blocked their entrance. “The council is not taking further public comment today.”

Hot prickles broke out on the back of Donovan’s neck, and he reminded himself that he wasn’t allowed to lose his temper. “Is the council taking a vote today?”

The guard shrugged. “I don’t know. All I’ve heard is that they’re full, and they won’t be allowing speakers.”

Donovan counted to ten. “You might want to tell the council members that there’s a new social media campaign that is going to pull attention from all over the globe to our little province. I’m the one leading that campaign. They will want to listen to what I have to say before they vote on something that impacts the entire region.”

The guard stared at Donovan as if he were speaking French. For a moment, Donovan had the sinking feeling that the fellow simply didn’t care, and they were going to be stuck out here. Well, not if Donovan had anything to say about it. It had taken them three hours to drive here, and he wasn’t leaving without doing something. Borrowing Bitari’s phone again, Donovan called Roark to see if he had managed to get inside the council chamber, and wasn’t surprised when the call went straight to voice mail. He left a message. Then he pulled up his Tumblr account and was pleased to see there were already over a thousand shares of the picture Roark had posted earlier. Smirking, he held the phone up to the guard to see. “We only posted that two hours ago.”

Frowning, the guard leaned forward to check. After scrutinizing the webpage, he brought up his radio and conferred with someone in Indonesian, throwing glares as he spoke. Donovan was pretty sure he heard a curse word or two in there, along with “British meddler.” Yeah. That’s me.
